Hawai'i's beloved Queen Lili'uokalani (1838-1917) wrote many wonderful songs ideally suited for ki ho'alu (slack key guitar), Hawai'i's beautiful solo guitar tradition. To honor the Queen and her musical legacy, the great slack key guitarist Ozzie Kotani performs thirteen solo instrumental arrangements of the Queen's melodies, ranging from classics known around the world, like Aloha 'Oe, to beautiful rarities. |

Kani Ki Ho'alu, which translates as "The Sound of Slack Key", is a name given to Ozzie when he was studying the Hawaiian language at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Here, on his first national release, he plays both original, six including the title track, and traditional mele (songs) on nylon and steel string guitars. Ozzie is currently recording a series of solo instrumental guitar albums for Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series, documenting his entire repertoire. |
